Overview- Red-green color blindness is form of color blindness where the person sees the colors red and green as identical. It is seen in about 6% of males but less than 2% of women. (1)

Signs and symptoms- Patients use the wrong colors of an object, they would also would have a low attention span. They are sensitive to bright lights and and excellent sense of smell, and excellent night vision. Red-green color blindness is not fatal.

Genetics- Red-Green color blindness is caused by a recessive allele. There are different types of colorblindness and red-green color blindness is one of them.
There is a heterozygous form in which the person is a carrier of the disease. It is not caused by an error in cell division, rather it is passed down by the parents. The disease is sex-linked and is found on the X chromosome. It is more common in males because males only have one X chromosome while females have two meaning that females would have to have to have both of their X chromosomes affected to be color blind while males would only need one.

Distribution- Red-green colorblindness is more common in males than in females. Males are made up of X and Y. Males only need the recessive x sex cell to be colorblind. This trait is only found in the X chromosome not in the Y.Girls have two x's, boys have one x. If a boy gets a bad x, he doesn't have another x, so he's going to be affected(3). Women need to have both recessive sex cells to be colorblind. If women have a dominant and a recessive trait than they would be carriers for the colorblindness. The ethnicity that is more common to Caucasian boys(4).

Management and Treatment- Red-Green color blindness can be treated by getting glasses or contact lenses specifically for the color blind person which can allow them to see more colors than they would be able to without them. There are also laser eye surgeries that the person can get to help the problem. (2)

Miscellaneous- There is 5 to 10 percent of people in the United States that has this disease.

Society- The disease is viewed as a bad thing to have but is definitely not the worst a person can have. You cannot tell a person is color blind by looking at them which helps the people who are color blind from standing out. The disease can affect the way a person is able to contribute to society because they may not be able to see things important to everyday life like warning signs and traffic lights. A person with Red-Green color blindness also may not be able to get certain jobs that need to see certain colors including electricians, firefighters, and pilots.
